Proposed Improvements

The proposed school bond would provide money to make several important safety and structural improvements to our school buildings.

Anacortes High School

Restore/Improve Building Structure

  • Reconstruct areas with flat/near flat roofs and replace roofing that is beyond its useful life
  • Correct structural support for building additions that are settling away from one another
  • Improve quality of classrooms with additional power outlets, better lighting, more space
  • Eliminate high cost of maintaining obsolete equipment
  • Replace corroded plumbing and inadequate electrical services
  • Address drainage onsite that causes water to flow into ventilation system

Increase student/visitor safety

  • Improve control of entries and exits, to keep our students in and intruders out
  • Fix issues of narrow hallways -- doors that swing into student traffic and are difficult for teachers to close without being exposed in a lock down
  • Improve ability for the building to withstand earthquakes without the failures we experienced here after the Nisqually quake
  • Improve evening use safety with better lighting for exterior walkways and parking lots
  • Provide safer solution for student pickup and drop-off areas
  • Increase on-site parking for daytime and evening use
  • Move bus loading zones onsite from neighborhood streets
  • Replace antiquated electrical system

Improve the educational environment

  • Reconfigure small classrooms and address those which have antiquated lighting and power
  • Increase quality of science labs
  • Expand small library with its limited space for books
  • Address issues in technology shop classes that must restrict enrollment due to safety concerns
  • Expand crowded cafeteria which must also serve as a student commons
  • Provide additional restrooms needed for student and visitor use

Restore and improve outdoor spaces

  • Replace bleachers (visitors side already condemned) at War Memorial Field
  • Replace War Memorial Field grass with synthetic turf to allow year round use (both school and community programs) and greatly reduce maintenance costs
  • Complete Rice Field facilities begun with volunteer efforts

Mount Erie Elementary School

Restore/Improve Building Structure

  • Correct onsite drainage off hillside into building and parking lot
  • Eliminate frequent water outages by replacing water main into building

Increase student/visitor safety

  • Improve evening use safety by increasing illumination on exterior walkways and parking lots
  • Reconfigure parking lots to improve student safety when entering/leaving building
  • Increase on-site parking for daytime and evening use

Improve the educational environment

  • Add a gym to restore cafeteria/multipurpose room use as intended
  • Relocate cramped computer lab to allow teacher to move around classroom

Anacortes School District Maintenance Facility

Restore/Improve Building Structure

  • Reconstruct building that is beyond its useful life
  • Add coverage areas to protect equipment from adverse weather, preventing rust damage
